2009 May 29
by Ricky Frausto

Hey everyone, it has been forever and a day since my last post. I just haven’t had the time to put the work into keeping this blog up to date. I want it to be up to date and so I am going to try and put a priority into posting daily. I think I just need to sit down and just do it. Hopefully, I am successful at it.

So as you may already know, I had a successful and wonderful time in Denver, Colorado during the 2009 Rocky Mountain Regional CrossFit games qualifier. I placed second and thus have booked my ticket to competing in the 2009 CrossFit World Games. It should be a blast and I am looking forward to it. I felt I did well and believed the workouts to be fair and  appropriate. The second workout was my nemesis and proved to be what kept me from winning the whole thing. Maybe. I just broke down at the end of that workout and it cost me dearly. All in all though, my preparation was legit and got me a spot so I am happy.

I am also ecstatic because CrossFit Omaha also qualified three other people. Kyle Kasperbauer, Libby DiBiase, and Stacie Tovar all earned themselves a spot for a chance to compete for the top spot of Fittest person on the planet. We are also going to be taking a 6 member team, 3 guys and 3 girls, to compete for the affiliate cup. This means that unlike last year where only Joe, Libby, and myself traveled to Aromas, this year there will be ten of us going along with some spectators for support. CrossFit Omaha will have a strong presence and I am very proud of this fact. I think we will do a wonderful job and show the rest of the world that the mid-west is producing some serious contenders, year in and year out, for fittest people/gym on the planet.

Our training for the next 6 weeks or so will come primarily from CrossFit Football because I truly believe in the strength bias that John Welbourn has created. That kind of programming has been been my secret all along. I am not a very heavy person. All of 150 pounds. I attribute my strength relative to how much I weigh because of heavy squatting, benching, dead-lifting, cleans, and snatches. I did a lot of this in my years as a strength coach at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. I followed a conjugated periodized program originating from the boys over at Elite Fitness Systems. I breathed Dave Tate, Jim Wendler, and a whole host of other studs that bleed the strength game. I wasn’t necessarily the fittest guy at the time but I was getting stronger and stronger. Thus when finding CrossFit, it was a perfect match for me. I was a wrestler by trade and now I was going to be able to use my developed strength and pair it with my wrestling motor to now start my quest towards being the best CrossFitter I could be. I love Crossfit and it has given me an avenue to display my love. The fire I have to compete is grand. I want to be the best because I know there are better crossfitters out there.

As I have mentioned, I am only 150 pounds and I have never complained about being small when the weights start to go up. I just try and get as strong as possible to make up for it. I love being small. It is a blessing in disguise. I like showing up to a competition and have people look at me like, “this guy is gonna have trouble with the big weights.” Although I am beginning to not be able to use that anymore as more and more people catch wind of who I am.

I love the fact that CrossFit is in it’s infancy still and there is still so much to be learned and taught. I am a good coach but there is still so much I have yet to master. I want to be a better motivator. I want to learn how to manage a group better. I want working out with me to be more fun. I have to learn how to loosen up. I am always so serious when it comes to training. I have so much passion. It really is hard for me to gravitate towards learning the business side of running a business. I want to learn to accept that and hold my end up of the bargain. I love CrossFit.

I know I have rambled away from my original idea but I always have a tendency to do that. It’s kind of my m.o. I think I am done for now. I will post some of the workouts I have done and you can see how I am preparing for the games. Only six weeks left.
